How effectively do external awnings & shutters cool a building?

Most of us have experienced the desire to block out the harsh summer sun entering our homes and offices through a window. Internal blinds can certainly keep a home cooler, but is there more that can be done by homeowners to make their home more comfortable and reduce power bills at the same time?  External blinds and other shading could be the answer homeowners are looking for.

When you SHOULDN'T get Solar Panels

Homeowners interested in saving on their electricity costs should install Solar Panels, right?

Not necessarily!

Impressively named 'geothermal heating systems' and 'Solar PV Systems' are a great way to save money on energy bills in the long run, but if homeowners are looking for some immediate fixes that cost less in the short term, they should consider an energy audit from a qualified NatHERS Assessor.

Your Home is the result of a collaborative project between the Australian Government's Department of Industry and the building and design industries. It bills itself as “Australia's guide to environmentally sustainable homes”.   While this is a big claim, I believe the scope and level of detail justify this claim, and make it a must-have reference manual for those it is designed for.
